Cheney! As in “Newman!”

May 21st, 2009

Why does this man still have a voice in the media and American politics while GW remains silent?

Both telling and so damn annoying!

He is no longer getting intelligence breifings, my fearful zenophobic patriots! How does HE know that one of the affects of closing Gitmo will put a “terrist” on my patio lawn furniture?! Or is he just referring to more of his own brand of make believe intelligence?

Somebody serve up this uber tool a very fresh, cold, sparkling can of STFU!!! Go to bed already, Dick!

Seals No Thing, Magic Tub & Wall

March 14th, 2009

Kicking off the DON”T BUY THIS EVER category of new product review section.

There are some things that are so awful they inspire me to proselytize:

Seals NOTHING

Seals NOTHING

Now, I normally do things right.  Where caulk is called for, I caulk away.

In this circumstance I had a large gap in the corners of my basement laundry area.  The contractor who put the mostly waterproof panels on the wall didn’t make sure the corners were tight.  Would have required a 1.5″ bead of caulk.  So this product seemed like it was going to come to the rescue.  Hell, if it could be used in a bathroom tub it should be able to handle the once in a while moisture of the laundry area.

WRONG!

After careful installation, the strips pulled away from the corners and left a nasty bad awful trail of thick adhesive.  So the adhesive stuck just fine to my surface, but not to the product itself!

At least two hours of my life were lost trying to carefully scrape away the adhesive with a razor blade.  As I would slice the adhesive off, it would flop back onto the surface and require a whole new round of slicing.  Pulled off the wall, the stuff could be rolled around on your fingers, sucking all the oil and moisture from them but wouldn’t lose any amount of its stickiness!

So despite infinite amounts of sticking power, the products fails on itself.

Athletic Charity Event Donation

March 13th, 2009

I have mixed feelings about athletic charity events as I am considering a 4-day cancer charity ride from Cleveland to Cincinnati this summer.   I am apprehensive though.

Donating to them is great and all, but what if someone you know starts doing a lot of them?  You want to support the cause and their efforts, but is there a point where you start to get annoyed and feel like maybe the person should be meeting the event quotas personally and then seeing if friends, relatives, associates will donate?

The poll below is a one or the other situation.  The results will affect how I move forward with the Pan Ohio Ride and any other event I choose to participate in in the future.

Haven’t used a WordPress poll before, so I am not sure if your answers are anonymous or no.

How do you feel about charity athletic events when someone you know asks you to donate?

Corner Alley Review

March 1st, 2009

From my review on Yelp.com

“Weak.  MUCH better bar food can be had elsewhere.  Waiter was nice enough but the place reeked of “We’re really not that interested in quality and are just fine with slopping along” and a reliance on low, Applebees-type expectations.  The place looks great and was clean enough but I would rather patronize a Heights small business.”

Had the deep fried pickles as an appetizer.  The pickles that showed up were sweet, not dill.  Don’t believe the menu specified them as such.  Was like eating deep fried sweet tarts.  Gross.  The beer battered fish I got was on the verge of being too old to use.  All other dishes on the table were mediocre at best except for Riley’s pot roast.  Word has it that was good.  Was so frustrated with the place that I didn’t want to put another thing from it into my system.

Wouldn’t have picked the place, but we all got suckered in by the downtown $30 for two plates deal.

From what I understand, the bowling is $50 an hour with up to six sets of shoes included.  Not sure that’s so good either.

Tech For Less

January 27th, 2009

Another team project headed up and designed by a third party. Involved some great people within TFL and the expertise of Fauxmachine – another project partner of Skipstones.

Skipstones provided the original XHTML/CSS files and then worked with the various partners to implement, tweak, and muscle the project together. Multiple menu types, some fun javascript, a single page cart, and a client demand for perfection made this a superior project.

K&H Pet Manufacturing

January 27th, 2009

Skipstones Media implemented the skin provided by a third party (they also headed up the project). The geniuses at Splish provided back–end and other various support services.

Modifying an existing skin of a CMS is great way to get high end technology at more reasonable costs. There are caveats, of course, but the level of functionality in the Magento Commerce package used would have cost this client close to six figures if they had opted to have this developed from scratch as a custom solution. This heavily tweaked implementation of Magento allows only logged in users to purchase – effectively creating a method for their wholesale buyers to purchase and catalog only for regular users.
