I have mixed feelings about athletic charity events as I am considering a 4-day cancer charity ride from Cleveland to Cincinnati this summer. I am apprehensive though.
Donating to them is great and all, but what if someone you know starts doing a lot of them? You want to support the cause and their efforts, but is there a point where you start to get annoyed and feel like maybe the person should be meeting the event quotas personally and then seeing if friends, relatives, associates will donate?
The poll below is a one or the other situation. The results will affect how I move forward with the Pan Ohio Ride and any other event I choose to participate in in the future.
Haven’t used a WordPress poll before, so I am not sure if your answers are anonymous or no.
I think one a year is OK, but charity rides are just a gateway drug into randonneuring and self supported long rides. Do a search for Ohio Randonneurs down in the Columbus area. Events are way longer than most charity rides, and are cheaper too.
But, I’d donate for you to ride from Cleveland to Cincy. I’d donate for you to ride from Cleveland to Burlington too..
And I’m going to be sure you drag me over Middlebury, Brandon, or Appalachian Gap this summer.
You didn’t vote, Mr. Beganyi, but thank you for your input!
We will see if I can make it over a gap this year. I am looking forward to riding with you this early summer.
My capacity to donate is dependent upon if I have a job; which is something I cannot guarantee with much accuracy at this point. At this point, I am assuming every paycheck I receive is my last paycheck and must be treated as such.
I understand your concern and apprehension. Research your potential charity organization for effectiveness. I have had a bad experience in the past which can make one want to NOT fundraise with them in the future.
However, I do feel that these are great ways to 1. bring awareness to the cause, 2. offer team support, 3. raise money for patients and the cause.
So, go for it, I will for sure support if I am able to.
